INTERVIEW WITH MICHAEL JAMES COX
Michael James-Cox Productions was founded in 2014. Michael has had over 10 years of experience within the theatre industry and after training as an actor he has taken the step into producing.
His first show – Impotent was a sell-out success, followed by a co-production between Graeae Theatre Company and New Wolsey Theatre – The Iron Man. Since then Michael has honed his craft by working at Mark Goucher Productions Ltd. This has played an integral part in Michael’s career, working on productions such as; The Miser, The Dresser, Million Dollar Quartet, Hairspray, Jeeves and Wooster, Slava’s Snowshow, The King’s Speech, The Vagina Monologues and A Chorus Line. Michael attended the Stage One New Producers’ Workshop in 2014 and was the recipient of a Stage One Bursary in 2016 for his current production of Raising Martha at the Park Theatre.
What does Stage One mean to you?
What I really like about Stage One is the human aspect. I love that if you need a piece of advice or to talk to someone, Stage One is there instantly. They are an incredibly supportive team, who have been there to support me throughout my producing career.
Last show you saw and loved?
That is a tough one as I try to see as much theatre as possible. However, there is one show that will always stand out to me; it was the 2013 adaption of Wendy and Peter at the RSC – had me in tears! I also really enjoyed last year’s First Light at Chichester Festival Theatre – that was another crier.
What do you think, is the best thing about the Theatre Industry?
Everyone who doesn’t work in the industry thinks everyone is out to get you and we work with sharks and vultures but that just isn’t true. I love how supportive the industry is and how we all want the best for our friends and colleagues. It’s a tightly knit community and I love it.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given?
You’ve been given two eyes, two ears and only one mouth for a reason. Watch and listen. That’s the best way to learn.
