Tom graduated with an MA in Musical Theatre from Guildford School of Acting in 2013. He has since produced The Bakewell Bake Off at the Landor Theatre and set up The Baking Committee Ltd. Tom is soon to be the General Manager at Sell A Door Theatre Company and attended the Stage One New Producers’ Workshop in October.

What does Stage One mean to you?
I’m personally at the beginning of what I plan to be a very long term relationship with Stage One. To me, Stage One provides a “safe” environment for commercial producers in the UK to develop their skills. The offering of invaluable advice and a positive perspective on my potential career has been very beneficial, which can occasionally get lost in the madness of it all sometimes.

Last show you saw and loved?
Other than American Idiot? Go see American Idiot. I loved In The Heights at The Kings Cross Theatre when I saw it a few weeks ago. Fantastic energy, brilliant creative work and excellent performances. It’s like nothing else you can see in London at the moment which I always find exciting.

What do you think is the best thing about the Theatre Industry?
I really enjoy the collaborative nature of theatre and its willingness to embrace and encourage people starting out. I love the way that new partnerships just happen out of a single conversation. Even though it isn’t necessarily as financially rewarding as other jobs, the satisfaction to be able to work in a creative industry and see your successes come to life is like nothing else.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given?
Probably something that came out of the Stage One New Producers’ Workshop, which was there comes a moment when you’ve just got to take the plunge and ‘do it’. It’s very easy to plan something and never actually take the step, which means you’re committed (financially usually) but that step is the only way to move forward with your project in the first instance, but also your career.
