Q: How Do I Start Producing?
A: The best way to start producing is by just making it happen. Producing is a collaborative process, so if you have some friends who are actors or directors get them together and start putting on some productions. University is a great time to try out what works and what doesn’t – providing your university has facilities you can use to put on your productions. If not why not try street theatre or asking festivals how you apply to get on the circuit.
Twice a year Stage One runs a three day workshop for New Producers which is generously supported by the Society of London Theatre. The course is designed to give new producers an insight into producing with talks from a range of industry professionals on topics such as; marketing, PR, contracting, budgeting, negotiating, rights, raising funds & looking after investors. It is a unique opportunity for new producers to learn the wide range of skills required to produce commercial theatre. Applications have just closed for this May’s workshop but applications will reopen in July for the October workshop.
