Q: “On The Face Of It Fringe Theatre Is Commercially Unviable. How Do You Make It Appealing To Investors?”
A: With Fringe Festivals all over the UK in full swing, the season of leafleting, dragging audience members off the street into your theatre and Producer/Stage Manager/Stage Sweeper has once again descended upon us! It’s difficult when starting out as a Producer to make money back on Fringe shows but it’s mostly about creating contacts and learning your craft for the future.
Most Producers at some stage of their career have produced on the Fringe – to an investor they could be investing in the next Danielle Tarento or Emily Dobbs. If investors get on board with you now they will be favoured in the future (hugely successful) productions you produce. It’s also important to remember that people only invest what they can afford to lose and do it because they care about the arts/your development.
Pay back your investors as soon as you can and make sure you pay everyone are the golden rules. These starting steps in your producing career are crucial to making sure you build a positive reputation for yourself. So actually sweeping a stage or mucking in when you can really does matter!
