Q: Where Should I Look For My Next Job In Theatre?

Image

A: Let’s face it… we don’t all just land our dream job instantly. We work in an industry where we have to work very hard to make it to the top. With the variety of jobs on offer for a Producer it’s always good to be specific. Do you like working on Plays or Musicals? Do you want to work with new creatives or revivals? Do you enjoy the logistics side or do you find it easy asking for money towards shows?
After working as an independent producer, you might get to the point where you’ll want to work for a larger company to gain experience and possibly a mentor. So how do you find these roles? Gone are the days of sending you CV through the post or knocking on producers doors, we are in a digital age of applying for jobs. You will need the essential 4 “job search engines” in theatre, consider it my leaving gift to you all!

The essential 4 are:

  • UK Theatre – Does exactly what it says on the tin, jobs not just in London but regionally too.
  • The Stage – A classic, been around forever. Always worth checking for those West End roles.
  • The Guardian – The heavyweight of the job advert world. Preferable for jobs in London but you can search dependent on your own criteria. Meaning you can filter your options to the ideal role you want to apply for.
  • The Arts Council – Last but certainly not least, the “go to” for every organisation to advertise through (mainly because it’s free)! Again has a filter system, so you can search dependent of your area and salary expectations. Brilliant at having a variety of jobs from not just well established organisations but also lesser known start-ups.
